What was once a vacant plot of land on Knight Road in Grass Lake now boasts what will be an approximately 17,800 square foot structure – home of the new Grass Lake Surgery Center slated to open in September 2020.

This project, a joint venture which includes Henry Ford Allegiance Health, Advanced Orthopedic Specialties, a third party developer/manager, and eight spine and orthopedic surgeons with practices in Jackson, is an $8 million investment.

The Grass Lake Surgery Center will serve as an outpatient surgery facility, as orthopedic and spine procedures are increasingly being done at outpatient surgery centers, according to Mark Smith, M.D., chief medical officer, Henry Ford Allegiance Health. “These minimally invasive procedures result in faster recovery times and great outcomes for our patients,” says Smith.

Grass Lake Surgery Center manager Todd Borst agrees. “The [surgery] center will provide the added comfort and convenience of returning home on the same day of surgery,” he said.

Groundbreaking took place on Sept. 3, 2019 – an exciting addition for Grass Lake and surrounding communities.

“This new outpatient surgery center is a positive step toward offering patients in the region expanded access to safe, high quality, outpatient orthopedic and spine surgery. The center will also provide the added comfort and convenience of staying close to home,” says Borst. “We look forward to welcoming patients this fall.”

The construction was spearheaded by the CSM Group of Kalamazoo, who estimated an 11-month timeframe for completion. The exterior, designed by architectural firm PAE, is a compliment to the beauty of its natural surroundings, according to a statement from Henry Ford Allegiance Health executives.

The 96-acre parcel purchased by Henry Ford Allegiance Hospital will serve the community well. Grass Lake Charter Township Supervisor Jim Stormont says of the new development, “It is a win-win for our community. One thing I’ve been trying to do is get a retirement center in Grass Lake – the development of the surgery center may be an incentive for that to happen.”

There are more developments in the works for the parcel in Grass Lake, apart from the surgery center; although the details have not been officially announced at this time.

Stormont speculates these developments will allow for and encourage housing developments and act as encouragement for individuals, such as employees of the surgery center, to move to Grass Lake.

“Housing developments raise our tax base so we can do more things in the community,” he said.

Stormont added that there is talk of a new subdivision coming to the area which will prove beneficial to the school system and community in general as residency increases, as well as a millage this November to improve the roads in Grass Lake.

We will be exploring the road millage more in depth in The Exponent, which is now covering Grass Lake and is available through mail subscription, online by ordering here, or at local stores in the village.
