The Evening Snapshop, Monday, March 30

Aleigha Davis smiles for the camera, and for customers. Aleigha and her co-workers provide a touchstone – at an acceptably social distance, of course – for Cement City residents.

All quiet in Cement City

OK, OK, so things are almost always quiet in Cement City. Now they are even quieter since the coronavirus lock down hit.

But there remains a place in town where people can get a few things they need without having to drive to bigger stores, reducing the risk of running into a lot of people and, as a result, the germs a lot of people might be carrying.

“We have been doing good, keeping the doors open,” said Aleigha Davis, who mans the counter at CC Village Market, located at 133 Main St. in the village. The store is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

For residents, the little store is more than a place to trade money for goods. People who stop in to get a needed item or two are able to get a little human contact as well. It is a tried and true way for neighbors to keep a lookout for each other.

When we visited the store Monday morning, they even had toilet paper on the shelves.

Davis is one of the unsung heroes in the coronavirus scare. When asked if she is afraid of catching the virus, she said “Of course. I am washing my hands a lot.”

But she is still smiling, and her presence is reassuring to some who might have no one else looking out for them.

It is hard to put a price tag on that.
