For many parents, raising a teenager can be a challenge that is often very stressful. Today’s teens are into social media, cell phones, and often just want to hang out with their friends. On a recent trip to Onsted High School, I came across a teenager who seems to be mature, focused, and on her way to a bright future. I’m talking about Onsted Wildcats talented volleyball player Mya Hiram.

Head Volleyball Coach Rhonda Hubbard said this about her star player: “Mya is a sophomore who starts on the varsity team and is mature beyond her years. ”Hubbard went on to say “Mya’s primary position is outside hitter, she does a very good job of leadership, she’s always working, always hustling.”

Coach Hubbard has great faith in her star player. “Mya sets the tone for what our practice should be, Mya is very solid, not only does she excel on the floor, she also excels in the classroom.”

Mya clearly loves school. “I have a 4.0-grade point average, and I’m in the Top 10 for my class. I really like science class and math . . . that’s where I’m most strong. I like basically everything about school.”

Family is also important for Mya, and her father Damien Hiram, who serves as the Athletic Director at Onsted. You might think that all they do is talk sports when they get home, but this is not the case. “We’re both very tired when we get home. He has long days with work and I have long days with class and practice.” Damien added “We try to leave it at the gym, it’s very hard because we’re so involved. We do our best to relax and be a family when we are home.”

Mya has great family support. Even her grandmother, Nancy Lerch, volunteers at her games. “I couldn’t be prouder of Mya. She is everything I could imagine that any young girl would want to be.”

With all of that support, Mya is on her way to doing great things in her future. “I plan to go to college to play basketball and major in dentistry, I would love to be a dentist.”

Knutson’s Sporting Goods and The Brooklyn Exponent are proud to honor Mya Hiram as our Student Athlete of The Week.
